With 9,102 new coronavirus cases reported in the last 24 hours, India saw the lowest surge in daily COVID-19 cases in nearly seven months. During the same period, 117 fatalities were recorded, also the lowest in over eight months, taking the death toll to 1,53,587, according to Union Health Ministry data on Tuesday.

The country had logged 1.06 crore cases since the beginning of the pandemic in January last year when India recorded its first case. Of these, more than 1.03 crore people have already recovered, the government data shows. More than 1.53 lakh people have died because of the coronavirus disease.

The last time India recorded around 9,000 daily cases was on June 4 last year (9,304) when the government had just started lifting the coronavirus lockdown. The drop in daily cases comes as India inoculated 20 lakh, people, till Monday — day 10 of what the government calls the world’s largest vaccination drive that was launched on January 16. Over the next few months, India hopes to vaccinate a significant section of its population — 3 crore health and frontline workers in phase 1 — to break the chain of transmission.

The country registered large-scale hesitancy when reports of adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) came through. This uncertainty in the public minds can hinder this progress, the centre has directed states to take penal action against any person or organisation spreading misinformation related to the vaccines. As of now, the nation is using two vaccines — indigenous Covaxin and AstraZeneca’s Covishield made in Pune. The world’s COVID-19 Pharmacy is also granting these drugs to its neighbours including Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Myanmar and Bangladesh with Afghanistan next in line.

Speaking of vaccinations, Tata Group’s healthcare venture is said to have started initial discussions with Moderna Inc for a partnership to launch its COVID-19 vaccine in India. The US biotechnology firm said lab studies showed its vaccine would remain protective against variants of the coronavirus first identified in the United Kingdom and South Africa. Pfizer, the first company to seek emergency use approval in India, has said it would pursue its request if the government commits to buying shots.

Delhi has logged 148 new cases of COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. Sources, however, say that the latest round of serosurvey has found the city is moving towards herd immunity from coronavirus, with 50 to 60 per cent of people in one district has developed antibodies. Herd immunity is what the authorities are trying to achieve with the vaccination programme.

India’s worst-hit state, Maharastra has seen the second-highest cases in absolute numbers with 20 lakh cases — at 1,842 cases.  The state also recorded the highest daily deaths at 30, followed by Kerala (17) and Chhattisgarh (13).

Kerala, where the country’s first COVID-19 case was detected and quickly became the poster child for pandemic management with its low mortality rate, logged the highest daily cases in the country with 3,361 infections. On Monday, 45 per cent of the new infections were reported from Kerala, where lack of testing is being blamed for rising in infections.
