As India celebrates its Republic Day, thousands of farmers knocked down police barricades at Tikri, Singhu and Karnal bypass to entered Delhi on foot this morning amid enormous police presence as they kicked off their tractor rally against the government’s new agricultural laws. With chaos unfolding near the city’s borders, the “peaceful” rally witnessed protesters getting baton-charged, and policemen fired tear gas shells. Soon after police stopped the Kisan tractor rally from moving towards Ring Road

Police used tear gas shells after scuffles between protestors and police took place at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar after protestors took over a police vehicle. Security has been tightened in the national capital with police barricades mounted at various significant places in the city including ITO, Yamuna Bridge and other locations.

Although farmers were allowed to hold their tractor rally – “Kisaan Parade” – after the annual event at the iconic Rajpath, they still swelled at the borders at around 8 AM even before the annual celebrations started. Reports state that some cops were injured while trying to stop the protesters. Unprecedented visuals showed chaos unfolding at the Singhu border, which divides Delhi and Haryana, and Tikri border in the western part of the national capital. Thousands were seen marching with flags; rows of tractors were seen on the three routes that were cleared the Delhi Police.

A video shows police forces firing tear gas shells from an overbridge as protesters on road looked for cover in Delhi’s Akshardham. More than 5,000 protesters had gathered this morning near the Singhu border, the epicentre of the agitation against the new farm laws that began late November. At Tikri, farmers’ leaders asked the protesters to maintain calm after the march began at around 9 AM. “Our rally will be peaceful, and we will stick to the routes assigned,” a leader said.

On Sunday, Delhi Police had allowed the tractor rally after the annual Republic Day parade. But they had strictly told the protesters can not disrupt the celebrations at Rajpath even as the farmers insisted their parade will be “peaceful”.

Following the scuffles, police stopped the Kisan tractor rally from moving towards Ring Road in the national capital. Speaking at the Singhu Border, Satnam Singh Pannu of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, said, “We have to move towards Ring Road but police are stopping us. We have given them 45 minutes to speak to their seniors. We are carrying out a peaceful parade. The route they are asking us to follow was not agreed upon. They have cooperated with us, and we are cooperating with them. We request that they continue to follow the route they are currently on”, said SS Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police at Singhu Border.
